I was talking to a friend of mine the other day about bosses. He told me that recently a supervisor who wasn’t his direct report came over to him and made a demand. The demand was that he should stay an extra 1.5 hours, for the rest of the week, to fix a certain problem. This friend’s direct boss was unaware of the demand and they have had the same trouble with this supervisor before. Nothing has been done about it so far.
That got me thinking about how people get promoted to leadership positions. It varies from company to company obviously, but in the case above, I wonder how much training this supervisor received regarding leadership. I mean…wouldn’t a good leader know that if they ask nicely, they are more likely to get cooperation to begin with? How does this even happen?
